Sponge Bob

Late summer is the time of the Earth element, which is associated with the spleen, pancreas and stomach. If life was normal we would be having late summer barbecues, going to concerts, visiting friends and generally socializing. It is the time of harvest and of preparation for the coming of autumn and winter.

It is becoming more and more obvious to me that the harms of social distancing, mask wearing and general distrust of one another is actually causing more health problems than the virus itself.

Whether you realize it or not, your body (your animal) absorbs on multiple levels a vast range of negative and positive emotions, sensations and feelings. If your animal is basically healthy it is more or less able to cope with these variations, but if you are getting on in years and you have been isolated in an apartment, or unable to be as active socially as you normally should be, then it becomes more difficult for your animal to stay healthy.

Your animal needs people, it needs social interaction, it needs movement and the sort of inspiration and uplift that comes from theatre and music and good food.

So despite the doom and gloom and fear-porn that fills the media these days, please try to get outside, not only to exercise but also to visit and interact with people. By all means take care but don’t be frightened. Statistically you are more likely to win something on the lottery than be infected with Covid-19, so just be normally cautious and do what you can to bring some balance and optimism back to your life.

The reason I titled this blog Sponge Bob is because our bodies are like sponges, absorbing all manner of energies. If you have been feeling more tired or more uncomfortable recently it is because your body has been absorbing a continual diet of anxiety-producing energy. One of the best cures is qigong, so make sure you maintain your practice and if you have friends to practice with, so much the better.

The other side of this is that if you can keep yourself happy and healthy then you begin to radiate this energy into the world. We need more of this, so try to make yourself a ‘Sponge Bob of Light”!
